Ray’s Take on Episode 2: “Past Prologue”

Let me start with a further thought on “Emissary.” Sisko is a reluctant shaman, the wounded healer that has traveled and transformed through tremendous travails. Remember Clarke’s Law. Any sufficiently advanced or alien technology will look like magic. His mystic epiphany helps him heal himself, not recovering completely but able to move beyond that point in time so that he can help others. The best people to acquire power are the ones that don’t seek it. The reverse of that is also true.
Garak is paraphrasing “Sympathy for the Devil” by the Rolling Stones, I’m certain it was intended and is deliciously appropriate.
Fun Fact: DS9 has the only turbo lifts in Star Trek that actually move.
O’Brien is a master of the transporter lock.

Tahna Los seems a shadow of nonlinear time coming back to haunt Kira. I’m certain that the station is haunted, with all the abuse that was suffered there.
Sick bay beds do NOT look comfortable.
Los sees the Federation as another fascist regime, just as Kira did. His “Bajor for Bajorans ” seems like more of a Nation philosophy, odd coming from an oppressed people but unfortunately understandable.
The return of the Duras sisters is a great use of previously encountered characters, preserving the link to TNG, and who doesn’t like a little Klingon cleavage?
Bashir is a lousy spy.
Odo and Sisko are amazing working in tandem, even though Odo can’t do pretense. I laughed out loud.
Garak is a master of the 36 Stratagems.
“No further RESISTANCE”. Such a cleverly written line.
The introduction of Garak, his mystery and interaction with the crew and particularly Bashir, creates a depth and complexity that didn’t previously exist in Star Trek. Garak is easily one of my favorites.
